Why Did He Do That? (part one)

A respected theologian and author provides the below quote from John's gospel and then asks a question:

"When Jesus came to his disciples in the upper room at evening on his resurrection day, he said, 'Peace be with you'; and when he had said that, 'he showed unto them his hands and side(John 20:19-20 PHILLIPS). Why did he do that?"

Consider the question. Meditate on it.

More on this later.

  1. I wonder His word of peace is connected to the marks in His body... Sort of a visual version of Paul's standard greeting: "Grace and peace." Grace = these marks which propitiated God's wrath and bought our redemption. Peace = one of the precious effects of that atonement.

I intended to hint at my answer, but that's pretty close to all of it.

  2. By His stripes we are made whole in Christ. It sounds like a paradox: like finding comfort in our Lord's wounds that can never fail as they plead for us before the throne and bring us peace with God.

  3. How about this for a point of view.

The grave could not keep Him. He has overcome death, and not only "normal" death, a gruesome one as well.

He spoke to his friends in peace and love, and confirmed his victory with the proof that he overcame death. Think about it, his wound were three days old. No man could have survided the crucifiction, and no man could have survived the wounds in the side, yet Jesus proved his sonship by showing these woulds.

So, if Christ is for us, and He has overcome death, then what is there that can stand against us?
